5 ways to make your salon more sustainable
by Rhianna Hull from Moxie & Muse
With sustainability taking a front seat for most of us in 2023 there’s been lots to implement, unpack and re-learn. It’s not as straightforward as it looks but in saying that I personally think using these 5 tools you’ll be well on your way to a sustainable 2024.
Recycling
This is a tricky one. Sometimes just putting all your waste into a bin and sending it on its merry way is a little like passing the buck. It is important to understand where your waste is going and to ask for some hard evidence. If we can source local and legit waste management it then also keeps us accountable with how much waste is coming in and out of our workplace.
Banking & Superannuation
Whether you are a stand alone home salon or have multiple staff, choosing an ethical bank and super provider can greatly reduce your carbon footprint. The “Big Four” banks generally invest in fossil fuels industries and large corporations whose values may not align with your own e.g animal testing. Some small banks are owned by the big four so it’s important to find out who is at the top. Most states in Australia have banks who are investing in renewable energy and climate friendly companies. If you do decide to make the switch, be sure to tell your bank why you left. Be sure your staff are aware of what superannuation companies offer sustainable practices so they can make informed choices when selecting.
Instore changes
Simple swaps to full overhaul, any amount helps. Changing your light fittings to LED, installing water saving fittings to taps, updating air conditioner, fitting blinds or window film to eliminate heat, add more plants, reusable mugs, composting organic waste, use ocean friendly soaps, use bamboo hand towels & toilet paper, install a water tank, add solar panels. Something I learned from Alexx Sturt from low tox life was “ phase out, don’t freak out”, meaning use up what you have first you don’t need to rush and bin your half empty palmolive hand soap.
Investing in the future
For me this is education. As professionals people trust our opinions. We can educate staff, clients and our audience. It is important to pave the way for newcomers to the industry and to be mentors. Most of us are small businesses and don’t have the means to employ a sustainability officer so we also have to wear that hat. Read more blogs, invest in courses and talk about sustainability with your team.
Become a local
Giving back to the community can lead to new opportunities and support a sustainable local network of small businesses. Host fundraising events where you can partner with local charities. Some easy options are - pre-loved clothing market, art exhibition, music gig, wine tasting & creative workshops.
When introducing changes don’t get carried away with doing everything all at once. Pick one thing at a time, research it, believe in it and get excited about it. Be the change you want to see.
